I shoudl’ve posted this yesterday. But meh, EDSA became a waterworld and the bus ride from SM North to Monumento lasted 3 hours.
Anyway, I’ve been looking forward to seeing this movie, and special thanks to Azarael Coladilla, I got to watch it earlier than expected. Yay!

I watched the advanced screening of Orphan last Friday with my boyfriend at Gateway Cineplex 3. There were cocktails and food, press people… wanted to mingle but I was too shy. Also, I got there late since I had to finish some stuff at work.
I went to the small table at the entrance of the cocktail area and was given the movie pass and a CD. Later on, I found out that the CD contains data about Orphan, a copy of the trailer, and some pics and notes about the movie! Yay! I managed to read some last weekend, though I forgot to bring my notes to work today (mebbe I’ll just update this post later on. lol).
On the cinema:
I LOVE Gateway’s Cineplex. Their seats are really comfy and the airconditioning was good (remember my earlier post about Trinoma’s cinema? It was hot there). Their sound system was great too! I could feel my seat vibrating everytime there was a tense scene during the movie.
On the Movie:
The story is about a couple, Kate and John (I LOLed when I read that their names are Kate and John. Reminds me of the TV couple with 8 kids) and their troubled marriage - their past keeps coming back to them. Kate especially, struggles with her inner demons from the past. Trying to regain normalcy in their lives, the couple decides to adopt a child and eventually found Esther.
Esther appears to be a cut above the rest - very formal, demure, and very pretty too. She dresses in a very formal yet old-fashioned manner (hello lolitas!) and is very intelligent. She has this likeable yet strange aure about her.
Strange things started to happen when Esther entered Kate and John’s family, and soon, Kate feared that her family might be in danger. No one, not even her husband, believed that Esther might be causing the strange happenings around their family.
And here’s where the fun starts. I tell you, you should watch this film.
I kept squirming in my seat - coward Madz. Boyfriend and I also tried to ‘diagnose’ what’s wrong with Esther, psychology terms came up. All of our guesses were wrong.
On the “technical” side:
Okay, I’m not very knowledgeable about this part. I only know a bit on this, and a bit on that. I think that the cinematography of the movie was good. Good shots. Some scenes were well done while some were lol-worthy (there was a two-second slo-mo sequence in an action scene. I wasn’t very impressed with the musical scoring though - too much suspense themed background music (dundun.. dundun…). Though the movie is a thriller, viewers can only have much ‘dundun’ sound fx in one movie. There were sevaral scenes in the movie where us viewers were getting pumped with suspense then suddenly - nothing (audience: yiiii~! *dudun..dundun..* LOL).
Also, why does Esther have to look that sinister in the poster? It’ll be more intriguing if she looked a little more cute there. A friend said, “who would even think of adopting a kid that looks like that?” I dunno, maybe that’s just how they want it to be.
Anyway, have to ge tback to work…
