Around four months ago, I was determined to get myself a bunny. I did my research, checked my savings, and calculated how much I would need to feed that bunny. To think I was jobless back then, heh. I strolled in Cartimar, looked at bunnies and asked about food and cage prices. After doing more accounting stuff (as if I had that much money) and more research on rabbit care online, I finally got myself to go to Cartimar to get bunny stuff.
I got the largest available wirecage, some ceramic dishes, a water bottle, and a kilo of ‘imported’ pellets. I still remember the saleslady telling me that those pellets are good for rabbits. Then, the rabbit.
I got this cute little creature:
My little fur baby.
White fur, blue eyes, female. I don’t want more bunnies anytime soon so I just got one. So darn cute.
Still cute, only bigger.
She’s huge! To think that she’s only around 6 months old. Based on research, there’s a possibility that she has some giant genes in her (a New Zealand white prolly - wait, NZs are just mediums, but why is my Luna huge?), but I’ll never be sure. Rabbit ‘breeders’ don’t really monitor the bloodline of their rabbits, thus the ordinary rabbit breed. Well, there are some people I met on a local pet forum who breeds dwarfs and lops. But I don’t have that kind of money to get a lop (they’re expensive and a little sensitive - prone to GI problems).
Now on to rabbit care. It’s frustrating. There are some rabbit stuff that aren’t exactly available in the Philippines. Like recycled, non-clumping litter and those timothy-hay based pellets. Maybe there are suppliers here, but I’m pretty sure that they’re either expensive or are located in places unknown to me. I can’t even follow basic cage guidelines due to monetary constraints. Well, at least I got that ‘use only ceramic bowls’ and ‘unlimited timothy hay’ part. Still, it drives me nuts whenever I check bunny blogs and find out that I might be using the wrong items for my rabbit.
Some things I use for Luna right now might freak out hardcore rabbit enthusiasts. Like me using ordinary wood shavings for her litter or using high protein pellets. Add having the wrong kind of flooring for her 2×3 cage.
Also, not getting her to a regular (rabbit savvy) vet visit will get me cursed by the online rabbit enthusiast world.
Now, as a rabbit owner living in the Philippines, I can’t really spend much on those ‘proper’ things. Well, I am trying to get them little by little. I’ll get those plastic flooring things in a few weeks. And maybe have a hutch built for her. Then get her spayed (since I don’t plan to have kits and that rabbits are prone to cancer if they don’t have kits and are unspayed). Right now, I’m asking a fellow rabbit owner about litter stuff.
(just now, she told me that I can get wood pellets at Makati Polo Club or have it delivered to me. YAY!)
A little geeky eh?
